Disecting nutrient claims - What does it all mean???

Listing of the main terms used in food labelling:

Nutrient claim: The new code of practice for nutrient claim:

Reduced fat, low fat, less fat

The food must contain at least 25% less fat than the regular product

90% fat free

An American way of saying contains 10% fat

Low fat
Low in fat

The food contains no more than 3g of fat per 100g of food

No added sugar

The food has no added sugar (sucrose and other simple sugars), no honey, malt, malt extract, glucose syrup, or fruit juice

Unsweetened

The food has none of the above mentioned sweeteners and no artificial sweeteners

Diet

The food contains at least 40% less energy than the regular product

Low salt, no added salt, salt – free

The food must contain less than 120mg sodium/100g food or less than 0.3% salt

Reduced salt

The food must contain less than 350mg of sodium per 100g food or less than 0.9% salt

Cholesterol – free or no cholesterol

The food must not contain more than 3mg of cholesterol per 100g of food.  The food must also meet the requirements for a low fat claim

Low sugar
Low in sugar

Food must not contain more than 5g total sugars per 100g, or 2.5g total sugars per 100g of liquid

High fibre
High in fibre

The food must contain not less than 3g fibre per serving

Low joule
Low calorie

The prescribed serving of the food has no more than 70kj (17 Cals)

Gluten free

Food must not contain more than trace amounts of gluten
