Fitness facts...

Individuals who exercise regularly are less likely to develop:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Certain forms of cancer
  • Osteoporosis

Individuals who exercise regularly are more likely to:

  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Effectively control the pain and joint swelling that accompanies arthritis
  • Maintain lean muscle, which is often lost with increasing age
  • Have higher levels of self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Continue to perform activities of daily living as they grow older
  • Experience overall feelings of well-being and good health

Exercise can relax you

One exercise session generates 90 to 120 minutes of relaxation response. Some people call this post-exercise euphoria or endorphin response. We now know that many neurotransmitters, not just endorphins, are involved. The important thing though is not what they're called, but what they do: They improve your mood and leave you relaxed.

Flexibility training

  • Allows greater freedom of movement and improved posture
  • Increases physical and mental relaxation
  • Releases muscle tension and soreness
  • Reduces risk of injury

Happy days

Exercise is not only a well-documented means of maintaining muscle and losing fat, recent studies propose that it can also revitalise your sex life.
In a February 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, scientists found that sexual dysfunction is more likely among those with poor physical and emotional health, and plays a major role with negative experiences in sexual relationships and with overall well-being.

Metabolism

Each of us have a specific rate of metabolism which converts food into energy for activity, the operational functions of life, and the repairing of damaged tissue. This conversion/reparation process is always operating whether we’re active or sedentary. The goal then of the fitness enthusiast is to periodically expend the effort to exercise then allocate ample time to recuperate. This cyclic process allows us to burn more calories both during exercise and metabolic periods. So those who believe the fat-burning, strength-building, health-promoting benefits of fitness are confined to the actual times they are exercising are in for a big surprise! The benefits of exercise extend well beyond cool downs as metabolism takes the baton and runs its operation of repair that is fuelled by calories. In other words, we can lose fat while we’re doing nothing at all; that’s sensational!

Long-term benefits of exercise

  • Decreases Risk of Heart Disease Inactive people are 2x more likely to develop coronary artery disease (CAD) then active people.
  • Decreases Blood Pressure High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Inactive people are 2x more likely to develop high blood pressure then active people.
  • Decreases Body Fat Regular physical activity helps maintain optimal body weight and composition. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
  • Decreases Cholesterol Level A high blood cholesterol level increases the risk of heart disease. Regular exercise raises the level of "good" cholesterol and lowers the level of the "bad" cholesterol.
  • Decreases Risk of Diabetes Physical activity lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes and increases glucose uptake for those who already have diabetes. Fit women have diabetes 66% less often than unfit women.
  • Decreases Risk of Cancer Physical activity lowers the risk of colon and breast cancer.
  • Decreases Risk of Osteoporosis Regular exercise delays bone loss and promotes bone formation.
  • Decreases Arthritis Symptoms Regular exercise helps keep joints flexible and helps build muscle to support the joint.
  • Decreases Number of Sick Days Exercisers feel sick almost 30% less often than non-exercisers.
  • Decreases Chance of Premature Death Fit people live longer than unfit people.

Look and feel fit as a fiddle

Exercising at high intensities of your maximum heart rate can increase your levels of human growth hormone (GH).  The higher your levels of growth hormone the younger you’ll feel and look.  Exercise is so important in assisting with the production of this hormone as our body’s natural ability to produce growth hormone drops off in your twenties.

Have a great night kip

Exercise can drastically reduce the stress hormone cortisols and adrenaline in our bodies.  So, if you need to unwind a bit of exercise does wonders.
